Maple, Acer saccharum
Maple is very dense, very hard, and very strong--renowned for all three and its resistance to wear. It holds up to heavy commercial use--libraries and hospitals. See photos just below
It has a relatively high coefficient of expansion and contraction due to changes in humidity, so we do not recommend maple for very dry or very humid conditions--think rooms not air-conditioned in Florida or places by the wood stove in the high, dry west. In most places, it is certainly fine, but in the extremes there are cosmetic risks as two adjoining pieces may expand or contract at different rates. There are more details here.
We buy maple from Dakota Hardwoods, a local distributor, operated by a friend. Our long association with them is as solid and strong as the maple. Much of the maple, but not all, is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. We don't use enough maple to establish a direct source and stock a volume.
